UPCOMING EVENTS

The Posada

On Saturday December 17, at 7:00 p.m., you are invited to join the Spanish Speaking Community for a spiritual journey of hope and light called the Posada. The posada denotes an Inn, a Shelter, or a Place to Lodge. The Posada will start in Saint Mary's Church and end in the School Cafeteria.

The Posada is a re-enactment of the journey of Joseph along with the Virgin Mary from Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem in Judea for the census decreed by Caesar Augustus. During the journey, the Savior - Jesus Christ, was born, wrapped in swaddling clothes, and laid in a manger because there was no room for them at the inn.

The re-enactment of "the Posada is an old tradition, created by Spanish missionaries in Mexico to reenact the pilgrimage of Mary and Joseph - a spiritual journey of hope and light." A spiritual journey of hope and light is worth our consideration. While the impact of the Tsunami, Earth Quakes and Hurricanes are with us, refugees of different kinds abound, for example, political, economic, and war, just to mention but a few. Refugees, no matter what their circumstance, are with us and are seeking an inn...shelter...a place to lodge... in our country, states, cities, towns, neighborhoods and our Church.

Please join us for this prayerful journey of hope and light along the Church and neighborhood.

Ministry Fair!

After a year on the job, I realize that we need to put on a Ministries Fair again. Ministries fairs bring an awareness to all that goes on here at Saint Mary's. Second, we need more people to get involved in the ministries that exist so that we can effect positive changes within and beyond our parish.

Soon to come we will have three consecutive Ministries Fairs on Sundays after each of the Masses. Information about each of the Ministries will be available, and each individual is encouraged to learn and hopefully commit to help one ministry. The opportunity to be great awaits all of us; and as Jesus told his Apostles, the one who wishes to be great must serve the needs of the least in the Kingdom here on earth.

I thank all of you who are committed to the Parish because your commitment makes a difference in the life of the Church and the world at large.

Fr. John

THANKS FOR A SUCCESSFUL

FALL FESTIVAL

A big thanks to ALL involved with this year's 55th Annual Fall Festival! All chairs, co-chairs, volunteers, sponsors and everyone added a helping hand to make the festival such a huge success. It is a blessing to be a part of a community, or should we say "Catholic Village" where there is such an outpouring of generosity, care, and love. The festival weekend from start to end couldn't have been as successful without the group effort of all involved. We appreciate all of the support and hard work that everyone put forth and thanks to everyone that came. The feeling of seeing everyone having a wonderful time is what it's all about. THANK YOU for allowing us the opportunity to chair this awesome annual event.

Margo and Bob Davis

THANKS

ALL SOULS LITURGY

The Liturgy for All Soul's Day will be celebrated on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the church with Fr. Michael officiating. There is a Special place in our hearts for our departed loved ones and this Liturgy gives us the wonderful opportunity to journey back with prayers and memories, to honor and remember those who touched our lives. We thank God for the blessings those lives gave and still give to us. May they rest in peace in the glorious presence of God the Father, the Holiest of Families, and share the joy and happiness they enjoy now with us.

The vigil candles that burn in the sanctuary represent more than 30 lives who lived and were loved, and the Book of Remembrance Vol. 1 contains hundreds of names entered over the last 10 years. This year we start Vol. 2 beginning with our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II. May he and all our departed rest in Peace and intercede on our behalf.

ST. MARY'S

COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN

UNITY IN PRAYER AND SERVICE

Greene Valley Development Center

Christmas Collection

The Community Concerns Commission of St. Mary's Council of Catholic Women is once again holding its annual collection of white tube socks over the first two weekends in November. Nov. 5/6, and Nov. 12/13, 2005. There are two differences this year - no type of candy will be collected at all, and Dot Gibson and her committee have been very busy knitting/crocheting caps, scarves, mittens, and stockings to be taken to the Center before Christmas.

Greene Valley is a state-operated facility in Greeneville, TN, for the care and education of people with disabilities. The Center opened in December 1960 and serves 34 East Tennessee counties. Our CCW has received numerous awards and recognition for our efforts in helping to make the holidays a little bit merrier for the people in the Center. Jane Durbin is the coordinator for the collection. Containers will be placed in the back of the church for your donations.

St. Lucy Guild Christmas Craft and Bake Sale

Don't forget! Mark the weekend of Nov. 19/20, 2005 on your calendar to do some of your Christmas shopping early. Crafts and baked goods, of all types, are available to purchase. If you have any home-made items that you would like to place in the sale, please do. All items are welcome. Also welcome are your favorite holiday baked goods. Items can be brought to the cafeteria on Sat., Nov. 19th anytime after 3:00 p.m., and before and after all Masses on Sunday. The women in this Guild have been working diligently throughout the year making a variety of crafts for your enjoyment. They are open to new ideas and always welcome new people to join them. The Guild co-leaders are: Pat Niemann at 481-0917, and Cathy Lowden at 463-8541. Feel free to call either of them for further information.

Early Notice: CCW "Baffle Raffle" Auction

Sunday, Jan. 22, 2005, has been set aside for the women of the parish to have fun and at the same time rid your home of some of the "treasures" that have been collecting dust - or gifts received that you are not using or have never used! The fun begins at 1:00 p.m. in Columbus Hall, and will conclude at 5:00 p.m. Start looking around your home for those items that you just could not have done without! Believe it or not, someone else would want them. How about offering baby-sitting services, or a one-time shopping excursion for someone, offer to bake a cake, cookies, or cupcakes on a one-time basis. Proceeds from the auction will go to a need that has yet to be determined. More information available as the date draws closer. Karen Wilkens-Butz will once again be our auctioneer. Light refreshments will be served.

CCW Board Meeting

The next CCW Board meeting is scheduled on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, 9:00 a.m., in the Board Room of the cafeteria. Guild representatives are encouraged to attend. There will not be a Board meeting in Dec. The Board of the CCW wishes everyone a very Happy, Blessed and Safe Thanksgiving, and Advent Season.

WISDOM AND LOVE

Not long ago I was telling one of my daughters about the following incident, and I made the statement that respect usually comes before real love. Many years ago when I was a teenager, I was dating a young man who was quite good looking and a few years older than I was. I had been mentally congratulating myself that he had chosen to date me rather than one of the other girls, who would have given anything to date him. I was very anxious to make a good impression. It was during the Great Depression years, and he didn't have a car or a job. We lived about nine miles apart, so he had to either walk the whole way or if he was lucky, thumb a ride with someone going his way.

It was Saturday, and my mother had assigned me chores in preparation for Sunday, when we usually had company over. I found a good book and became so engrossed in it that I forgot about my chores. About thirty minutes before my date was to arrive, my mother informed me that I would do my chores before my date came or when he arrived, but the chores "would be done". I apologized and told her about the book and that I had simply forgotten. She said she understood, but that the chores would be done, none the less. Did I understand her? I said, "yes" and began to frantically dust the living room.

My date arrived early that night. He watched me give the furniture a lick and a promise sort of cleaning. He then took the dust cloth from me and proceeded to dust each piece of furniture meticulously. Needless to say, the good impression I had hoped to make didn't happen. I learned with shame to do things right the first time. It was a powerful lesson.

Children during their teenage years have their hormones out of balance and do things with no thought of the possible consequences. They need a parent. Being a good parent is no popularity contest. You can't be a buddy to your children. They may say they hate your guts, but they need boundaries set by you, never the less. Children are actually glad that you set them, since it lets them off the hook with their friends. To be a good parent, you need to spend much time in prayer, talking to God. He will guide you!
