2008 Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair

Sixth grade student Elizabeth Sloop recently won Grand Champion in the Junior Division (grades 6-8) at the 2008 Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair held at Thompson Boling Arena in Knoxville. About 200 middle school students and 65 high school students from East Tennessee competed in the fair.

Elizabeth’s project titled “Stress that Kills, Nosema Disease in Honey Bees”, looked at the occurrence of the fungal disease in five different beehives in Knox, Anderson, and Morgan counties. She also noted the presence/absence of external parasites on the bees and the weather conditions. Elizabeth found that the hives that received disease and parasite treatments from the beekeepers survived while the single hive that did not receive any treatment died out.

For her efforts, Elizabeth received a trophy and a cash prize. She also received a Certificate of Excellence and a Special Award from SAIC. Twelve other St. Mary’s students also received recognition for their projects, including an overall 4th place award won by Juliana Statile and other special awards.

St. Mary’s School students have brought home the Grand Champion Award seven times in the last ten years. Teacher Marsha Sega attributes this success to the student’s diligence in producing such excellent projects.
